Following an international open design competition, Glowacka Rennie were one of four teams selected from 87 practices to further develop their idea for a new footbridge in New Islington, Manchester.

The bridge is in the spirit of the masterplan - it is bold, joyful and exciting. We are the Fish to Alsop’s Chips!

Our design philosophy was to visit the site, study the masterplan, and think about what the bridge should be. The bridge is an interchange between different flows of people coming from seven directions. As well as being an interchange it is an extension of the public realm, a landscape that allows flow in different directions and is also a platform for chance encounters, a space to sit, meet and grab a cup of coffee on your way to work.

The bridge creates a gateway into New Islington from Ancoats Urban Village, whilst respecting the historical fabric of the area. We understand how an extraordinary sculptural bridge can bring delight to the heart of a regeneration scheme.
